Emmys 2019 Reactions
Tony Shalhoub, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” – I’m going to guess vote splitting accounts for this.
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series
Alex Borstein, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” – Just kidding now I’m starting to think that maybe Amazon bribed the Television Academy?
Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series
Fleabag, “Episode 1,” Phoebe Waller-Bridge – I didn’t actually have this as winning this one as I assumed they’d want to give something to “Veep” and this would have been easiest, but am utterly delighted it did.
Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series
Fleabag, “Episode 1,” Harry Bradbeer – Another one where I was worried “Barry” would take home the prize (Which I’d have preferred over the other competition) but I continue to be relieved the Television Academy is recognizing “Fleabag”
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series
Bill Hader, “Barry” – 0 Surprise here.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, “Fleabag” – Yes. Yes. Yes!!!!
Outstanding Competition Program
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” – Delighted to see this take home the prize, and thank you Ru for using the stage as a platform to remind folks to register to vote (vote.gov!)
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie
Patricia Arquette, “The Act” – I had this going to the other Patricia nominated but I’ve heard good things.
Outstanding Directing For A Limited Series, Movie Or Dramatic Special
Chernobyl, Johan Renck – Sir, your family is not better than Phoebe’s family, no need to be rude.
Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie
Ben Whishaw, “A Very English Scandal” – Another wrong guess from me. I enjoyed this particular limited series (or cancelled show according to presenter Bill Hader). If he didn’t have the accent I’m guessing his admission of being hungover would be less endearing.
Chernobyl, Craig Mazin – I had this down as the winner, it won. I don’t feel great about it but am also not mad about it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie
Jharrel Jerome, “When They See Us” – I’m curious if the Television Academy realized there would be an actual riot in the theater if they didn’t recognize “When They See Us” at least once. If you haven’t seen it yet, please do.
Outstanding Television Movie
“Bandersnatch (Black Mirror)” – Okay but which plotline won?! Either way this is a fascinating choice and hopefully continues to grant validity to content from Netflix as contenders for awards.
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie
Michelle Williams, “Fosse/Verdon” – May we all have a Busy Phillips level BFF in our lives. Also yay for equal pay. While I may not have loved the show, I loved the speech.
Outstanding Limited Series
“Chernobyl” – I thought this was going to “Fosse/Verdon” but oh well. Clearly the Television Academy has a hard on for “Chernobyl.”
Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series
It’s a shame that Adam Devine’s song and dance intro was utterly unintelligible due to the sound mix.
“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” – Another well deserved win for this category basically dominated by white people and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart alumni (Sam Bee prevents me from saying white men).
“Saturday Night Live” – I see we’re going to conveniently ignore any other news about the show recently.
Outstanding Directing For A Variety Series
Saturday Night Live, “Host : Adam Sandler,” Don Roy King – Nothing against Don Roy King but I feel like the Variety categories need an update.
Outstanding Variety Talk Series
“Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” – Again not a particular surprise.
Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series
Peter Dinklage, “Game Of Thrones” – His performance in “Between Two Ferns” the film is better.
Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series
Succession, “Nobody Is Ever Missing,” Jesse Armstrong – Ugh I’m going to have to watch this aren’t I?
Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series
Julia Garner, “Ozark” – I PROTEST. At least Gwendoline Christie won most popular “Game of Thrones” cast member based on applause when they were presenting.
Billy Porter, “Pose” – The Television Academy needed to get one thing right tonight and it was this. Thankfully they accomplished that.
Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series
Ozark, “Reparations,” Jason Bateman – This was unexpected but I’m guessing a vote split was involved. Also I would love to read the rules on submitting episodes and why series choose to submit ones with famous / starring directors over someone not as recognizable.
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series
Jodie Comer, “Killing Eve” – I’m a little surprised (not in a bad way) by this. I thought Sandra Oh might have had the edge given her longer lasting presence in Hollywood. Really this is just another win for Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Also were all the Brits hungover/does Jodie have the same agent as Ben Whishaw?
Outstanding Comedy Series
“Fleabag” – Between this and Billy Porter’s win I can almost overlook all the other messed up categories.
Outstanding Drama Series
“Game Of Thrones” – UGHHHH I guess they had to validate all the other awards they’ve given it during previous and more deserving years by giving it an Emmy for the farewell.
