Review: Sound of Metal, Nomadland, Ammonite, Mank, and Godmothered

Awards season has truly begun with several contenders (though not all deserving) including Sound of Metal, Nomadland, Ammonite, and Mank. Also the family friendly Godmothered on Disney+.

More about Sound of Metal:
During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew.
Starring: Riz Ahmed and Olivia Cooke.

More about Nomadland:
Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad.
Starring: Frances McDormand and David Strathairn.

More about Ammonite:
1840s England, acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning and a young woman sentto convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever.

More about Mank:
1930s Hollywood is re-evaluated through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane for Orson Welles.

More about Godmothered:
Set at Christmas time, “Godmothered” is a comedy about Eleanor, a young, inexperienced fairy godmother-in-training who upon hearing that her chosen profession is facing extinction, decides to show the world that people still need fairy godmothers. Finding a mislaid letter from a 10-year-old girl in distress, Eleanor tracks her down and discovers that the girl, Mackenzie, is now a 40-year-old single mom working at a news station in Boston. Having lost her husband several years earlier, Mackenzie has all but given up on the idea of “Happily Ever After,” but Eleanor is bound and determined to give Mackenzie a happiness makeover, whether she likes it or not.
Starring Jillian Bell, Isla Fisher, June Squibb, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Jane Curtin.
